Adaptive systems increasingly reorder suggestions, change layouts and adjust their behaviour on their own. Those who use them can see that something has changed, but often not why, or how to influence it, and so they can lose trust and a sense of agency. This project treats adaptive design systems as design artefacts. It asks how their behaviour can be made interpretable in human–system interaction.
Approach
The project follows a Research through Design methodology that combines contextual inquiry with designers, co-design workshops, prototyping and multimodal interaction analysis, grounded in a literature review and expert critique.
Results
Expected results include a set of design strategies for interpretable adaptation, a series of prototypes of adaptive design systems and design principles for interpretable human–system interaction. Together, these aim to support more transparent, trustworthy and user-led adaptive systems.
